WE ARE PROUD to announce that our Ladies and Underage teams will be awarded for their 2009 successes this coming Friday (26^th) in The Bush Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon. MC on the night will be the comical Mickey Lynch and special guests will join him in saluting the underage and Ladies’ stars – with awards for player of the year, most improved player and club person of the year. Among the awarded will be the 2009 U14 Championship winners (girls), the U14 League champions (boys), the victorious Fr. Manning & Ted Webb team of 2009 and the U12 girls’ runners-up team. All managers, coaches and affiliates will be in attendance and will receive a deserved mention for their continuing hard work and support. Everybody is welcome to attend and a word of thanks to all helping in its preparation, including those in The Bush Hotel. Please be there for 8.30pm. Music, refreshments and raffle will conclude the presentation.

Despite the difficult times at the moment, Shannon Gaels G.A.A. Club are day by day continuing to provide Gaelic Games and coaching to all members of the community both male and female from age 6 and up. As a sports club we are extremely fortunate to have coaches, helpers and officials who give of their time for free. Without this support we simply could not continue as a club.

We are currently improving our existing Gaelic facilities at Cortober, Carrick on Shannon, Co. Roscommon. The work on the pitch development and erection of new dressing-rooms/toilet facility is crucial in making our training ground correlate with modern G.A.A. standards. To date, Phase 1 has been completed i.e. – drainage and re-surfacing of our playing pitch, erection of new goal posts and net minders, new flood lighting system, construction of new dressing-rooms (including roof, windows and doors) and toilet/store-room facility. Phase 1 has been completed for the sum of €50000.00 and has been paid for in full by the Club Development Draw which took place in October 2007. Phase 2 of the development will be completed by March 2010 – i.e. the internal finishes to the dressing-rooms, installation of electrical and plumbing including showers, external drainage, footpaths etc. and completion of flood lighting to pitch.

Due to the present economic climate, no grant funding has been made available from government or any other source. The work completed to this stage is being aided by a tremendous local voluntary input; which the club is in deep gratitude of.

The estimated cost to finish the work i.e. Phase 2 on time is €30000.00.
We are holding a Development Draw in order to raise the adequate finance to get Phase 2 completed on time. We know that times are difficult for everybody at the moment but we hope that when you look at the benefits that this facility will provide to all age groups within the club, that you will support our new fundraiser.

Tickets are 50 euro each or three for 100 euro. First prize is €2000.00 Members of the club will be calling to you in the next few days looking for your support and answering any questions you may have.

Minors Edge Past Castlerea St. Kevin's

The Minor team got the year off to a good start for the club defeating Castlerea St. Kevin’s in the Division 2 League with a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-8. It was a fast paced game of football in Castlerea– with some marvellous individual battles and an overall good team display from both sides. Our minor team is managed this year by Jimmy Deane, Cathal Sweeney and James Deane. Management had a simple plan with every player given a specific role from the keeper right up to the full-forward line. It was good to welcome Shane Leydon back after injury, and he more than fulfilled his full-forward role – working brilliantly partnered with the on-fire Fintan Sweeney - scoring a tally of 2-7 between them. Another man of the match contender was full-back James Filan who proved strong and decisive in his role – a great reader of the game, and working dependently alongside him was Luke O’ Dowd whose pace was a real advantage on the day. Some of the younger players also showed what they are capable of – Keelan Loftus tipping over a crucial point at a vital stage, David O’ Dowd battling midfield with his counterpart Fintan Kelly, while Rory McDonnell was working tirelessly in centre-field. Liam Murtagh, Dara O’ Carroll, John McDermott and Darren Conlon were stalwarts in defence and attack respectively. Substitutes Matthew Mulvey and Michael Murtagh looked threatening, while Chris Jordan was excellent between the posts.

Scór Sinsear
The County semi-finals of Scór Sinsear are scheduled to take place on Friday February 26th in Kilmurray Hall, Castleplunkett at 8:30pm and on Sunday February 28th, in Ballybay Parish Hall, Kiltoom at 6pm.
Entries must be submitted before 5pm on Wednesday the 17th of February and following the receipt of entries the organising committee will allocate semi-final slots to each club. Please note that the semi-finals will not necessarily be divided on a North-South basis.

Seachtain na Gaeilge Table Quiz
Roscommon GAA will host its annual Seachtain na Gaeilge Table Quiz in Kilbride Community Centre on Wednesday February 24th at 8:30pm. The competition forms part of the GAA’s contribution to the Seachtain na Gaeilge events agus beidh na ceisteanna ar fád as Gaeilge - after all, one of the stated aims of the GAA is the promotion of Irish language and culture.
The top three teams in Roscommon will go forward to the Connacht Final, and if they are successful there, to the All-Ireland Final which takes place in Croke Park on St. Patrick's Day, prior to the All-Ireland Club Football and Hurling Finals. Roscommon GAA would like to see all clubs entering at least one team in this competition. The Quiz is free to enter, teams can have a maximum of four members and entries will be accepted on the night. 125th Anniversary

The Association’s 125 Anniversary Celebrations are coming to a close and on November 1 the GAA returned to where it all began back in 1884. Exactly 125 years after the foundation of the Association at Hayes’ Hotel a special commemorative day of celebration was held in Thurles. Mass celebrated by Archbishop Clifford of Cashel at Thurles Cathedral was followed by a procession to Dr Croke’s statue on Liberty Square. A number of speeches were made before the President and Director General laid a wreath.

Newtownshandrum’s exciting Munster Club win over Thurles Sarsfields rounded off a memorable day. Work on the graves of founding fathers John McKay (London), Thomas St George McCarthy (Deansgrange), John Wyse Power and Michael Cusack (both Glasnevin) was also completed as part of the 125 Anniversary Year.

“The GAA: A People's History” was also launched this month to celebrate its 125th anniversary. The GAA: A People’s History tells the story of how the GAA has carved for itself a unique place at the heart of Irish life. It outlines how Gaelic games and the social world which revolves around the Association, has shaped the lives of generations of Irish people at home and abroad. From parades and ballads to epic journeys across land and sea, this history of the GAA is as much about what happened off the field as what happened on it. Clubs play a central role in the growth of our Association and are featured throughout the book. Reflecting on where our clubs came from and how they have grown and developed over the past 125 years will help us to build a strong Association for the future.

A special word of thanks to all clubs who marked the year by organising their own unique events and to those who went to great lengths to celebrate Lá na gClub last May,.

Hurling Helmets

In just over a month a new ruling will come into effect meaning that all hurlers of all ages will be obliged to wear a helmet complete with faceguard once they pick up a hurley whether in training or in a game.

Members of the National Medical, Scientific and Welfare Committee made a presentation to the media in the last month outlining statistical evidence of the reduction of serious head and facial injuries when helmets are worn.

Helmets have been compulsory at U21 level since 2006 and although goalkeepers face a special challenge adjusting to the use of helmets, they too are covered by the new ruling.

From January 2010 match officials will stop play in a situation where a player removes a helmet or attempts to enter the field of play without one. Posters outlining this initiative can be downloaded from http://www.gaa.ie/page/hurling_helmets.html.

Ag Éisteacht Programme Continues

The Uachtarán and Ard Stiúrthóir between them have now visited almost 20 clubs since April with Eoghan Rua in Derry and Ballymanus in Wicklow, two of the most recent visits. Thanks to all clubs who have expressed an interest in hosting what is an informal two hour questions and answers fact finding and information gathering session. The 2010 schedule is being compiled and clubs that are interested in participating in the programme should contact the Communications Department through alan.milton@gaa.ie.

Changes to membership rules and registration rules for 2010

Clubs are reminded that all clubs must complete the registration of Full and Youth members before April 1. Registrations must be completed electronically, through the Association's online player and member registration system (rule 2.2 of the Official Guide). This is now the only acceptable method of registration in the GAA.

Clubs should also be aware that the closing date for the acceptance of membership fees in order to entitle a person to the privileges of membership, including the right to vote at the club AGM, is on a date prior to March 31 (rule 6.2 of the Club Constitution). Therefore, the old date of August 1 is no longer in use.

Training for the new online registration system will take place in all counties in early 2010. Many counties are already on board the online system, with 960 clubs having used the system to register in 2009. Clubs will be receiving further communication on this in due course.

Games Development

The GAA Games Development Conference took place in Croke Park last Friday and Saturday, November 20th-21st. Over 650 delegates from all 32 Counties as well as delegates from Europe and North America attended the two day event. Speakers at the event included Liam Sheedy (Tipperary Hurling Manager), Mickey Ned O’Sullivan (Limerick Football Manager), Aidan O’Connell (Trainer Cork Senior Football Team), Enda McNulty (Sports Psychologist), Rod Thorpe (University of Loughborough) and John Considine (Cork Minor Hurling Manager). Topics such as Technical Development, Tactical Awareness in Hurling and Gaelic Football, Nutrition and Sports Psychology were discussed, and delegates had an opportunity to quiz speakers throughout the day. Young and old were in attendance to witness a truly great supporter and past player of Shannon Gaels, Paddy Mulvey, lay the very first stone of our new club dressingrooms recently.

It was a wonderful moment for the club to honour a man who has done so much over the years since the club was first established.

Also on hand was another prestiguous clubman, John 'Fr.' Heslin who blessed the ground amid much adulation - adding a humourous touch to the occassion and even referring to Good Friday at one point!!

FUNRUN, Local Derby and All-Ireland final for desserts

THIS WEEKEND (September 19th) will see great celebrations in Croghan village to commemorate 125 years of the G.A.A. and what a line-up is in store.

On Saturday morning at 11.30am, the U14 Parish League will be held for its second year - with the local parishes up against each other in what is bound to be a highly contested affair! Boys and girls from the ages of 14 and under will fight it out in a local football derby to be crowned the Champs of Croghan!

The Shannon Gaels Minor Club are eager for you to come out and support us in our first fundraiser for 2009 on Sunday next at 6pm. The hugely popular FUNRUN will see both young and old darting around the village hoping to get a grasp on some of the plentiful prizes available!

The FUNRUN course will be the same as previous years’ with prizes for: 1st, 2nd and 3rd home – person who raised most money – youngest person home and of course much more!!

Your support is vital and we encourage you to help the children get as many names on their cards as possible. Every amount is imperative at keeping the minor club running.

We take immense pride in the beneficial role we have in the lives of our players and we strive to make the club the best that it can be. We really need your help - as parents, players or spectators – over the weekend.

G.A.A. celebrates its 125 year milestone

ON THE FIRST day of November 1884, in the billiards room of Hayes' Hotel, Thurles, County Tipperary - Michael Cusack, Maurice Davin, John Wyse Power, John McKay, J. K. Bracken, Joseph O'Ryan and Thomas St. George McCarthy - set up the foundations of Cumann Luthchleas Gael or the G.A.A. - which would later become recognised internationally as one of the largest voluntary organisations in the world.

"The Irish who emigrated brought their national games with them and both regional and club units are now well established in America, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Canada, mainland Europe and in many other parts of the world where the large Irish diaspora are located.

The GAA has over 2,500 clubs in Ireland alone.

The site upon which Croke park now stands was originally owned by Maurice Butterly in the 1870's and was known as the "City and Suburban Racecourse". The GAA became one of the ground's most frequent users.

In 1908 Frank Dineen purchased the 14-acre site for the handsome sum of £3,250. The GAA subsequently purchased the site from Frank Dineen in 1913 for £3,500 and immediately renamed the ground Croke Park in honour of the association's first patron Archbishop Croke of Cashel."

Minors March onto County Semi-Final

Shannon Gaels 4-15 St. Ronans 1-02

THE SHANNON GAELS minor team eased into the Division 3 Championship semi-final with a resounding 4-15 to 1-2 victory over St. Ronans on Friday evening last.

Although the Gaels did not play as well as they would have liked there was a lot of glimpses of what the lads could produce. The forward play was impressive; particularly 3-5 scored by Daniel Morris, while in midfield there was excellent high fielding by the duo of James Filan and Liam Murtagh.

The Croghan pitch held up well for the game as the home team played into a stiff breeze in the first half.

Three wides in the first five minutes may have put doubts in the mind but an excellent 45' by Fintan Sweeney put the Gaels three points to the good. Eleven minutes into the game and Ronans found their feet. A goal chance for them was cleared off the line by David O' Dowd but from the resultant 45' the Ronans full-forward made a good catch and unleashed a powerful drive into the top of Chris Jordan's goal. This left Ronans a point behind. They followed up with another good score to put the sides level.

Daniel Morris had numerous goal chances for the Gaels some of which were narrowly over the crossbar but on the 23rd minute a long ball from Niall Leyden found Morris who dispatched the ball into the bottom corner.

Five minutes later a ball from David O' Dowd found Morris thirty yards out and another good attacking run by the forward found the net once again.

At halftime Shannon Gaels were 2-07 ahead of St. Ronan's 1-02.

The second half continued in the same way as the first with the Gael's dominance getting stronger as the game wore on and the 36th minute saw Morris complete his hat trick for the day.

The Gaels decided to tag a few points during the second half. Pearse Beirne with two brilliant points (he finished with a total of 0-4), plus points from Morris, Sweeney, David O' Dowd and Keelan Loftus kept the Gael's score ticking over.

The Gael's final goal came in the 57th minute and was one which is unlikely to be replicated again in Croghan, indeed it was a goal which Giovanni Trapattoni could have done with in Cyprus. Great footwork by Andy Dolan in the 14yard line dazzled everyone before he delicately side footed the ball into the bottom corner.

With that the final whistle blew three minutes later and the Gaels had their semi-final position secured. There was excellent performances on the evening from Pearse Beirne, James Filan, Andy Dolan and Daniel Morris. The usual suspects of David O' Dowd, Liam Murtagh, Luke O' Dowd, Fintan Sweeney and Niall Leyden also worked hard.

Shane O'Dowd in the back line and Keelan Loftus also put in a good shift. Substitutes Adam Fennel, Fergal Harmon, Darragh O' Carroll and Rory O' Donnell helped the team progress.

The team are into the county semi-final which is likely to be played next week. Unfortunately County player Shane Leydon picked up an injury and the club would like to wish him a speedy recovery!!

YESTERDAY EVENING, Thursday August 27th, saw the end of our U14 team’s campaign for 2009.

I had the privilege of attending all of their matches throughout the year and most of their training sessions and I would like to take this opportunity to say how proud I am of having been associated with them.

Back at the beginning of 2009 I was beginning to think that it was going to be difficult, firstly to get the group of lads that should be playing U14 out to training and secondly, that it would be impossible to get a coach or manager for them.

How wrong could I have been.

Up steps the emotional, impassioned and skillful -James (Deano) Dean & the cool, practical and rock steady expert in coaching - Mr Cathal Sweeney.

These two young men took the U14 team under their wings in March of this year and patiently and vigourously brought them to two county finals and the semi final of the Garda Cup. Winning the County League Final in what was – to say the least – a very exciting and heartstopping match.

The Garda Cup semi-final was the last match this team played officially for this year and they went into it as major underdogs against a strong Division 2 team - the Frenchpark boys of Western Gaels.

The lads once again proved to anyone left with any doubts that they could play among the best.

From the first kick of the ball they fought hard and won some fabulous scores. Unfortunately there had to be a loser and the Shannon Gaels U14s bowed gracefully out of this competition.

Much credit is due to the young players, themselves for their dedication to the game and the club and the pride they brought to the parish.

I cried tears of heartache and disappointment with them when they lost the county championship final by a mere three points and I cried tears of joy, delight and pride when they won the county league final against the same team by a single point.

My heart swelled when I saw them recently organizing themselves for a warm-up before a game under the leadership of captain Daniel Marron. It showed just how much this team has grown, not only in stature but in maturity of mind and respect for their mentors and the beautiful game of football.

They have certainly brought their supporters on a roller coaster ride of emotions and they will not be forgotten for a long time.

From big Jimmy Burke in the goals to little Shane McDonnell on the full forward line I wish each and every one of them good luck as they go back to school and every success in their future footballing careers.

I also wish to express my sincere gratitude to Cathal and James for their dedication and hard work with this team and look forward to working with you both in the future.

I firmly believe the future of Shannon Gaels football is in safe hands.

The team overcame Leitrim and Longford last Wednesday to reach tonight's final against Westmeath.

Last Saturday, August 15th, the Division 3 League Final saw Shannon Gaels take on championship winners St. Faithleachs at 6pm in Kilmore. The match - like their championship encounter - was a very tight affair with the second half in particular nail-bittingly close.

From the throw-in, St. Faithleachs were determined to set a fast pace - with their dominance through players like half back John Mulligan causing serious problems for the Gaels lads.

Shannon Gaels were trailing at one stage by four points but through good scores by Daniel Marron and a splendid goal by Matthew McDermott, at the half time whistle a single point separated both sides.

Gaels emerged the stronger at the start of the second half and took a four point advantage thanks to terrific goals by Niall Morohan and Matthew McDermott who were working effectively up front.

Shannon Gaels were much more impressive in this half with players such as Shane McDonnell, Daniel Marron, Matthew Mulvey and Conor O' Dowd breaking down Faithleach's attack. Great kick-outs by Jimmy Burke in goals meant the ball was being fed into the half forward line.

Young David McDonnell was working tirelessly in defence but Diarmuid Murtagh - St. Faithleach's elusive corner forward - was using his strength advantage and always looked a threat on goal.

St. Faithleachs eventually capitalised on some shaky defending, blasting in a goal followed by a point in the space of a minute. Shannon Gaels answered with a super score by Michael Murtagh to reduce Faithleach's lead to one.

The Referee Ciaran Candon awarded a free to St. Faithleachs with five minutes to go, which Murtagh - their player of the match - converted to stretch their lead to two once again.

A free down the other end was sent wide by Shannon Gaels who at this stage were looking for another goal. A St. Faithleachs player was penalised for overcarrying and Matthew Mulvey set up Matthew McDermott for a killer goal. The umpires hesitated but once the green flag was raised the Gaels contigent went wild. The lead was again theirs by one precious point.

The joy was short lived though as St. Faithleach's John Mulligan powered forward through the midfield area after a poor pass by a Gaels player. Jimmy Burke was left with no option other than to break down the oncoming player - whereby the referee immediately pointed to the spot.

Diarmuid Murtagh calmly placed the ball down and with silence filling the park he sprang forward and smashed the ball into the net. St. Faithleachs were ahead by two with thirty seconds remaining.

Jimmy Burke walloped the ball up the field finding Daniel Marron - player of the match - who made a final attack on Faithleachs defence, slamming the ball past Jonathan Garvey who had no chance of saving it.

Joy for the Gaels, heartbreak for the Lanesboro lads and mini-heartattacks for the spectators!!!!

The U14s are once again up against St. Faithleachs in this weekend's Supervalu Division 3 League County Final. Kilmore is the venue this Saturday for what is expected to be a close encounter.

The Gaels were unlucky in the Championship Final - putting up a great fight - but ultimately losing by a mere three points.

Kick off is six pm with the club urging all of you to don the green and gold and go support the lads!!!

U12 Girls Championship - The Final Awaits!

Championship Semi Final

On a gloriously sun-drenched evening in Croghan stadium, Shannon Gaels defeated Four Roads in an entertaining semi-final of the U12 girls' championship.

The team played some fabulous football, moving Christina Beirne to the back line replacing the injured Aisling Egan who is out with a broken elbow sustained in the replay against Oran.

Gold medallist Christina was inspirational all through the game, continuously driving her team forward on numerous occasions. Aisling Cryan came in to fill the 13th position on the field. Early on in the game the girls didn't have much luck sending a few shots wide but Tess Murtagh got the opening score with a fabulous point.

The next point came from Katie Daly who played a spectacular game in midfield. Four Roads fought back getting two points to equalise. Shannon Gaels went in level at half time thanks to the excellent goal keeping of Sarah Surlis.

In the second half Aine O' Dowd got three lovely points - one set up by Eimear Cryan, the other two from fees. Four Roads came back and scored a point having earlier hit the crossbar but Emma O' Beirne having been put through by Rachel McDermott scored an outstanding goal putting the Gaels five points ahead.

Four Roads scored another point from a free but Aine O' Dowd wasn't finished yet, she scored a goal to put the Gaels seven points ahead with Laura Gannon unlucky with a shot on goal shortly after. Four Roads piled on the pressure and scored a goal with five minutes left.

Shannon Gaels' defence held out in the closing stages where Caoimhe O' Dowd, Connie Doyle, Laura Deane and Elaine McDermott were rock solid.

When the referee blew the final whistle, the atmosphere was unreal. There was a great turn out - great to see the community came out to support the girls.

The final score was 2-5 to 1-4. The girls couldn't have done it without their trainer Luke O' Dowd and their managers Sandra Surlis and Geraldine Cryan.

The girls will be eagerly awaiting the final showdown against Kilglass on Monday, 15th June.

Croghan Drumlion Cortober Community Games

Congratulations to all the children that took part in the county finals over the bank holiday.

The weather was brilliant but the heat made it difficult for the children to participate.

Despite this the area did very well.

U10 mixed ran very well and did us all proud – Team was Caoimhe O’Dowd, Shane Surlis, Aisling Cryan, DArragh O’Dowd and subs were Jason Conlon & Hannah O’Dowd.

U12 boys very nearly won a medal too with their top performance – Team was Shane McDonnell, Jack O’Dowd, Darragh O’Dowd & John McDonell.

Aine O’Dowd qualified for the final in the U12 girls 600m and put in a top performance on Monday.

The U14 boys relay team collected bronze on Sunday evening,

Team was Niall Morris, Jonathan Beirne, Keelan O’Dowd, Declan Morris and sub was Conor O’Dowd.

Well done lads.

All of our athletics got out of their heats on Monday and qualified for semi-finals so an excellent display of local talent was on show in Ballyleague.

On the Monday Sile O’Dowd was the first for Area to collect her Gold medal in the U16 girls 1500m, then Caoimhe O’Dowd collected Gold in the U10 100m and last but not least Christina Beirne collected her gold medal in the U12 girls 100m.

All three go forward to represent the Area & County in the National finals. Well done Girls and good luck in Athlone.

WHAT A SPLENDID achievement and we would like to wish the girls the best of luck as they represent the county in the finals!!!!

Shannon Gaels U-14 had another convincing win in the Super Valu U-14 Division 3 league with a 20 point victory over old rivals Kilmore. There was much confusion prior the game with Kilmore locked out of the away dressing room, however, the thoughts of the Gaels having to get their team talk in the referee room and the architectural initiative of Chris O Dowd, Kilmore got togged out. The Gaels knew that victory would guarantee them at least third position in the league, so with them thoughts in mind they entered the hairy Croghan Stadium pitch in determined mood. One minute in and Niall Morohan had burst the goals at the Mullaney shop end. Matthew Mc Dermott’s attempted shot for a point hit the post and fell to Niall who made no mistake.

The Gaels tagged on another couple points before a delightful ball from Mick Murtagh found Mc Dermott who fisted the ball of the post and into the net. Again another three points were tagged on before Mickey Murtagh scored a goal worthy of the Champions League final the night before. The Gaels left the field 3-08 to 0-00 at half time. In the second half a few lapses of concentration from the Gaels allowed Kilmore get scores on the board. The Gaels fourth goal came from an impressive passage of play, seen Mc Dermott score his second goal. The passing and support play prior to the goal was the best seen in the Croghan stadium for a long time.

With Jimmy Burke commanding between the post, Drew Bell and Johnny Beirne were in control in the full back line. Indeed Johnny got sea sick at one stage when he reached the Kilmore full back line but unfortunately came back without a score. Conor and Keelan O Dowd have impressed in the half back line with Keelan impressing more and more in each game while Conor has talent waiting to be shown!!! Mickey Murtagh and Daniel Marron did trojan work in the middle of the field. The lads first touch on the ball and kick passing a joy. The half forward line of Cian Harmon and Morgan Conway worked hard. Cian contributed at least 4 points and won an impressive amount of possession. For a U-12 Morgan has showed he has a big future with the Gaels. At the end of the game our full forward line contributed 3 goals, Niall Morohan with one and Matthew Mc Dermott with two.

The subs bench was used again by managers James Deane and Cathal Sweeney. The Mc Donnell brothers Shane and David were introduced 5 minutes into the second half. Shane has become a super sub for the boys and he contributed 2 points and won every ball that came his way. It was great to see David back on the football field and he took over from where Drew left off. 10 minutes from the end Dara O Dowd and a (sunkissed) Evan Beirne entered the fray and put in credible performances.
The Gaels final league game is against St. Faithleachs next Thursday evening the 4th June in Ballyleague at 7pm. The team would like to wish Matty Mulvey get well soon after he picked up a serious finger injury a few weeks ago.

G.A.A. 125th year commemoration

125th G.A.A. Anniversary – Clubs’ Contributions

As 2009 is the 125th year since the formation of the G.A.A., the Roscommon Champion decided to commemorate this special milestone by getting all the clubs in Roscommon to give a brief history of their own development. Here is Shannon Gaels’ one as written by Thomas Mullaney…

In 1858 the new railway line arrived in a very divided district that would later become the parish of Croghan. The howls of hunger from Carrick workhouse were still fresh in the memories of the people of the area, and this new mode of transport would shortly expedite the flight from misery. By the end of that year Tumna South, Killukin, Killumod and eastern halves of Kilcola and Eastersnow were amalgamated to form the present parish of Croghan. Thirty years later on 2nd March 1889 another unifying force would arrive in the parish with the founding of G.A.A. club Croghan John Mitchels to be followed late in the Spring with Drumlion Henry Grattens, a force that we are glad to say is alive and well 120 years on, starting as an arm in the fight of the Land War and playing an important role in many that have followed. The parish was then still divided between the Landlords Lloyds and St. George under the unions of Boyle and Carrick.

Mitchels and Grattens made their mark from the start on the playing fields and under the banner of Croghan reached the Co. Senior finals of 1903 and 1908 and again having a powerful team in the period 1916 – 20 when players such as John Kenny and ODey Travers would carry the fight. During the 1920s, Drumlion/Cootehall represented the area under the name St. Eidin of Tuamna. Again in the 1930s a great Croghan team would emerge and eventually in 1939 under the leadership of Jim Creighton win the County Junior Final. The unity of purpose that brought Croghan and Drumlion together for the ’39 title would reemerge again in 1949 with the founding of SHANNON GAELS.

A great minor team in 1951 winning North Title and the Junior Team winning the Northern League in 1953 would see the decade end with a second Co. Junior title in 1960. This Junior Team was further boosted by the minors of ’60 and ’61 who were Co. Fnalists and this combination produced in 1964 our great achievement, a County Senior Title.
The 1970s, despite this high point, made their own history with the winning of our first U16.

The frustration of defeat in the last hurdle in the Junior Championship in 79, 80 and 82 was put behind us with our third Co. Junior title in 1986. The foundation for a second equally successful centenary was well and truly laid with the magnificent Co. Title win of the U16s in 1987. Following the wins of 86 and87 we ended the decade in 1989 winning our 4th County Junior B Title.

Since going intermediate we had made very strong challenge for honours and after losing CO. Final in 1990 we made breakthrough beating Clann na nGael to win a Co. Title in 1991. Shannon Gaels have held their own at Senior Level since with many sturring battles against the best in the county and in 1999 reached the Quarter final of O’ Rourke Cup. Our Division 4 CO. League win 1991 has been followed by the great performance of our underage as wwe came to the end of the millennium Shannon Gaels have won C o. Titles at U12, 1998; U14 1999; Minor 2000;U21 2003 and Junior B 2007. Our contribution to every Roscommon All-Ireland winning team continued with Ciaran Lynch and Ollie Flanagan All-Ireland Junior in 2000.

Off the field a former Chairman and Treassurer of the club Thomas Mullaney after term as Vice Chairman was elected as Roscommon Co. Secretary in 1994 to 2004.

While football has dominated on the playing fields, in the 1980s our hurlers came into their own winning All-Ireland titles with Leitrim in 83 and 84 adding to the All-Ireland Football medals that have been won in every grade previously by players from the parish.

Besides winning inter-county honours players like Matt Moran in 1906, Jim Creighton in 1929-34, Tom Collins 47, Des Boyd 48, Ji Nerney ’53 and the Newton Bros. John and Des in the 1980s won Railway Cup selection and medals along the way. In Handball Jim Cahill was our greatest, a Senior Ulster title winner in the ’20 and ‘30s. Off the field the outstanding service officials like Tim Tansey (RIP), Ging Duignan, Leitrim Co. Chariman (RIP) and Paddy Mulvey to the G.A.A. in general, not to mention the many who have served the club itself. In the area of our native culture we have a proud record. Our Scor teams on which Seamus Butler and Patsy McNamara have been ever present, have won 50 Co. Titles in every event and preserve the rich inherited tradition.

While in athletics Mick Dowd was national Cross Country Champion in 1936-38.

In 1980s Shannon Gaels fielded a ladies team and players such as Aileen Boyd, McShera sisters,Francis Martin and Mary McGreevey were prominent with their longtime star Aisling Creighton returning Gaels again fielded and their Co. Junior Title win 2008 added another dimension to our role in Association under the direction of Alo O’ Dowd, Kieran Lynch and Gerard Butler.

Minor Update...

The Minor Team has reached that time in the year when all football is suspended due to exams. The year has gone quite well so far, on a playing front we have played six games and won six. We have the usual problems that all minor teams have to cope with, mainly lads away in school or college and exams.

What has been a major encouragement to us, has been the display of the non county lads. Players such as Andy Dolan, Pierce Beirne and James Filan have developed their game and are now playing as well as their county buddies.

Other lads such as Rory O Donnell and Mark O Dowd have now got a much more physical and determined aspect to their game and this has added so much to their all round ability. We are very fortunate to have a very solid goalkeeper in Chris Jordan and we were also delighted to uncover a new talent recently when Chris was not available and Adam Fennell took over in goal. In the forwards we have Daniel Morris who has the ability to score some spectacular goals. At the moment we are only scratching the surface with what Daniel has to offer and I hope that one day we will really see Daniels true potential.

Damien Mc Keon is another young lad who is a key part of our panel this year and his renewed enthuasiasm is great to see. Shane O Dowd, Dara O Carroll and Kealan Loftus are also showing great determination and a willingness to get involved and be a part of this minor team. We also have two players, Fergal Harmon and Ryan Dempsey, who were unavailable in the early part of the year and will make a major impact when they return. Daniel Marron although too young for this years panel, is learning what it takes to be involved and is as committed to training as any of the minor panel.

As a club we are very fortunate to have five young lads involved with Roscommon County under age teams. Shane Leydon with the minors and Liam Murtagh, Luke O Dowd, David O Dowd and Fintan Sweeney with the under 16s. These lads give a huge commitment both to their club and county and with regard to our own minor team are instrumental along with the rest of the panel in having us top of the league at the moment.

U14 Progress

The Gaels U-14 team are up and running this year in the Division 3 County U-14 League. The team have got off to an encouraging start with victories against Elphin by (3-10 to 3-5) and St. Michaels (6-17 to 0-4). They also had a narrow one point defeat to Kilbride when a draw would have been the better result (4-14 to 3-16).

There is one complaint about this league - managers James Deane and Cathal Sweeney have had tough decisions to make as the three teams they have played can/will only play 11-a-side. It means that the managers had to drop two players after analysing their 13 a-side game plan five minutes previously. Compliants a-side, this is a well balanced team. Their effort cannot be questioned and when the players click they can be devastatingly good.

Jimmy Burke is a rock in the goals. Drew Bell and Jonathan Beirne always have the situation in control in the full-back line.

David Mc Donnell, Matty Mulvey and Keelan O'Dowd control the half-back line and can turn defence into attack instantly.

The work rate of Daniel Marron and Conor O'Dowd is encouraging with Daniel a very able captain of the team.

The half-forward line players of Matthew Mc Dermott, Mickey Murtagh and Cian Harmon fight for every ball and can hit some pinpoint accurate scores. The full-forward players of Niall Morohan and Morgan Conway have become more than capable of chipping in some crucial scores.

In the recent St.Michaels game the management decided to use their bench and none could have predicted what damage these boys did.

Shane Mc Donnell, Morgan Quinn, Dara O Dowd and Matthew Burke were introduced to the field and their work rate and effort was outstanding. They fought for every ball and the fact that the four boys each got a score shows their true effort.

One of the most heart warming plays during the game was near the end when Dara O'Dowd had a chance to kick his own score from a free but seen Shane Mc Donnell free. A simple pass by Dara ensured Shane got his name on the scoresheet.

Credit must be given to the older players for giving the boys these chances. What this means now is the bench has options and Gay Dowd will have some tough choices where to play these four lads at u-12 level.

Traditional Treat

Last Friday night The Mulkerrin Brothers were quite simply - superb. What a crowd and what a fantastic evening!

The guys truly showed why they topped Ireland's Talent Show with their highly entertaining and amusing take on Irish dance and music. To witness such raw talent at that age was mesmerising.

The trio joined forces with an array of local musicians - many of them All-Ireland medal winners - to give the audience an Irish musical feast.

Young and old both attended with the youngest Mulkerrin eager to learn a few steps of the Brush dance!!

Fair play to the lads for coming to the Four P's on the night and thanks to all who attended. Thanks to Brian Mostyn and all the local musicians, to the Bush Hotel for putting up the lads, to Gordon Murray for providing amplification, to all who helped with ticket selling, stage erection and much more. And of course a big thanks to the main organiser, Leo Marron, for making the night a huge success.

We hope you enjoyed the night as much as we did and your support, as always, is greatly appreciated.

Now some music to your ears hopefully! ...

From a club's perspective there are reports that a lot of parents and children wanted to attend last Friday but couldn't due to licensing laws. In that regard it is rumoured that Leo Marron has jumped on the bandwagon again and amazingly has signed up a second prestigious concert with the Brothers.

This concert is rumoured to be taking place in an outdoor arena - in July - where the sun will be shining, the music flowing and the ceili dancing!!

Area community games Swimming competition will run on Sunday, 26th April in Aura Leitrim Leisure Centre from 7pm. Registration at 6.30pm.

This event is open to every child in our community games area. Those who qualify in this competition will go on to represent us at county level in Roscommon on the 6th and 7th of June. Training will continue for those going forward to Roscommon the following Wednesday, 29th April for six weeks at 7pm.

Carrick on Shannon - Connacht B league Champs!!

Carrick on Shannon Community School had a marvellous win over St. Attracta's of Sligo on Friday, January 30th last.

Manager Seamus Mallon watched proudly on in Kilmore as his team trounched their rivals by 2-11 to 0-4 to be crowned Connacht juvenile B League Champions.

It was Carrick's prowess in physical strength, size and skill that proved too much for the Tubbercurry side. Conditions were atrocious in Kilmore with the pitch resembling a muddy warzone afterwards.

Crucial players on the day inculded a number of our Shannon Gael's stars - Liam Murtagh, Fintan Sweeney, Luke O' Dowd and David O' Dowd on the sideline.

Tubbercurry never fully settled into the match and whether it should have been playerd in such weather conditions was questioned.

The Leitrim lads undeniably proved worthy winners. Liam Murtagh was superb in mid-field working excellently alongside team captain Conor Farrell and scoring a number of terrific points.
Fintan Sweeney had the match of his life covering all aspects of the pitch, from the centre-half forward position back into his own defence. He also kicked a couple of brilliant scores.

Towards the end Mallon started to use the bench with a late score from Tubbercurry unable to ruffle any feathers.

Carrick had lost to St. Attractas by six points earlier on in the season, but came back in full force last Friday to claim a well-deserved Connact Colleges victory.

New Coaches Wanted

We are developing our coaching strategy at present. In January, we are looking for new people to bring ideas to our minor panel. For 2009, ultimately anyone is welcome to join our coaching panel - be it parents, friends or players (senior, junior and U16 plus).

The former Foundation and Level 1 courses are being replaced and the new courses will be run either weekends or week evenings, whatever proves most suitable.

All underage children between 7-18 must register with the minor club this Saturday in Croghan Community Centre between 8-9pm.

THe registration is €30 per family and 20 per person.
Registration fees after this date cost €50 per family and €30 individually.

It is very important that team players i.e. ages 10-18 register on or before January 17th as the club has to assess and pass on team lists immediately to the County Minor board. Some of our teams may end up in 13 or 11 a-side competitions this year depending on numbers and in such an event we have been informed by the Co. Minor Board that named players on our list submitted are the only ones to be allowed play for the club hence the importance of registering now

Shannon Gael's U12s had a great win over Ballinameen last Sunday. They were convincing winners with an impressive score of eight goals and ten points at the final whistle.

Ballinameen managed to convert two goals and five points during the meeting. This match in Croghan was the first of the League fixtures to kick off.

Next up Shannon Gaels face St. Michaels in Croghan on June 15th at 12.30 pm.

On June 24th Ballyleague is the venue for our contest against St. Faithleachs. Supporters and players are advised to note that this game is scheduled for SEVEN PM and not the usual time.

Minor Football
We have played in the Div. 2 League so far against Kilbride, Oran, St. Croans and Byle, winning most matches resulting in a good standing in the League with one remaining game to be played after the exams against St. Aidans.

This team managed by Shane Loftus and Fergus Beirne has many talented players and deserves plenty of parish support once the games recommence.

Best wishes to all concerned with the Leaving Cert and third level exams.

U16 Football
Our U16 team also plays Div. 2 this year. They have played 3 games to date.
Unfortunately we lost out narrowly to St. Aidans in the first round of the championship who then went on to beat Strokestown in the final.

It might have been so different that day in Ballyfarnon had David O’ Dowd not been out through injury. However congrats to St. Aidans we understand that the final was a magnificent game. We look forward to meeting Aidans again in the final stages of the league when we will test the metal.

Again this team is laid off for the duration of the exams and best wishes to all the boys involved. Managers Sean Murtagh and Joe O’ Dowd.

U14 Football
This team is managed by James Deane and Fintan Sweeney, both minors themselves. Great credit to the two lads who despite the time constraints of third level college have made themselves readily available to put something back into the club.

The team has been training together now since the beginning of April and are making steady progress. They have played 3 league games to date and look forward to completing the league over the next few Thursday evenings against Kilmore, St. Ronans, Roscommon Gaels, Ballinameen and St. Faithleachs (June 19th).
All games at 7pm.

Alongside the U10s these children have attended training each week in the sports complex over the winter months and the results are immediately evident on the playing field.

This team has played first touch GoGames seven a-side football over the past two weeks in Boyle and they held their own in every are of the pitch. Some of these children are as young as 6 but the level of skill and competence handling the football for children so young is immense. The club is indebted to all its coaches young and old who participated in the complex with these children.

CONGRATS to our U12 player, Matthew McDermott who represented Roscommon in the Mini-seven Cumann na mBunscoil competition at Salthill during the Galway v Roscommon Connaught SFC. What an achievement for such a young player to say they have played for their own county at that age.
Both children from our club and the visiting Tir Chonaill Harps from Glasgow were on hand to offer Matthew all their support.
He proved his excellence by playing better football than most of the Roscommon seniors playing on the day!!!

The Gaelic Glaswegians

Two weeks ago, thirty children from two Glasgow schools visited Croghan for
the weekend as part of a Youth Exchange Programme, effectively integrating them into the local sporting community. This event was organised by Tommy Main from Tir Chonaill Harps, Glasgow along with Chris O' Dowd, Shannon Gaels and its objective was to break down religious and cultural barriers.

All the children were given a tremendous chance to see for themselves how gaelic games are run, with a range of coaches on hand to teach them basic skills. It was a very successful event, and a credit to those who helped in any way over the course of the few days.

The visiting children, along with their mentors arrived in Croghan on the Saturday evening to be greeted with a reception. After this they undertook some coaching followed by an introduction to GoGames which is the format for U10 and U8 Gaelic Games. The coaches on hand were superb, they went to tremendous effort to inform and educate the kids on how both Gaelic football and hurling is played.

Prionsias Killian from the Knockcroghery County Board AND ——- held coaching sessions in the park. There are pictures up on the website from the coaching sessions. A special word of thanks to Tina McLoughlin, who held a workshop with the children based on integration of their two different backgrounds, both culturally and religiously. On the Sunday, the children were given the chance to sample for themselves the electric atmosphere at a Gaelic Games Championship match—as they were brought to Salthill to witness the Rossies take on the might of Galway. Unfortunately the match didn't go to plan, but it was a great experience for them.
It was a worthwhile weekend and a lot of background work went into its organising.
Thanks to all who helped make it a success.

The U-14s lined out last Thurday evening in Cootehall in terrible conditions with the pitch itself flooded.

Michael Murtagh captained the team on the day and lived up to his title well. Niall Morahan had a splendid game in goals and made many valuable saves.
His kick outs and distribution of the ball were also exceptional.

Shane McDonnell was the star of the Shannon Gaels defence and broke up many of St. Michael's strong attacks. Aideen Filan and Lisa Collins played with their usual great sense of determination and fight.
Daniel Marron, Mick Murtagh and Darren Conlon tried immensely hard but were always up against it with a very strong and unwavering St. Michael's team.

The final score wasn't kept but was undoubtedly in favour of St. Michaels.

Tir Chonaill Harps visit last weekend

Shannon Gaels were delighted to welcome Tommy Main along with others from Tir Chonaill Harps in Glasgow to Croghan last Saturday.

The reason they were visiting our club was for the "Pathway to Youth Exchange" conference which was held over the course of the day.

Tommy arrived with six young people and we added ten to this figure from our collection of players. These included James Deane, Cathal Sweeney, Liam Murtagh, Luke O' Dowd, Fintan Sweeney, Paddy Cummins, Niamh O' Dowd, Karen O' Dowd, David O' Dowd, James Filan and Shane Leydon.

The Harps arrived in town on Friday evening and things got off to a flying start the following morning as the conference was held in the newly built Community Centre in the village. This structure formally known as the Creamery was recently renovated by a handful of local residents.
The building is bright, spacious and immense credit deservedly should be given to those involved.
It boasts two meeting rooms with comfortable seating for conferences. An exercise room is situated downstairs.

The conference comprised of tutorials and practicals courtesy of Roscommon County Games Development Committee, the Connaught Council and Munster Council speakers.

Ten O' Clock saw the first of two sessions by Peter Carney, who spoke practically on coaching for young children as well as offering good advice on refereeing and Go Games.
After lunch, those in attendance were treated to a talk by Limerick man Pat Fitzgerald. He spoke with great insight into club administration which was highly beneficial to both our club and the visiting Harps.

Themes covered included
- Understanding the importance of committees and structures in your clubs
- What are these roles
- Where do young people fit in
- Do you want a voice in your club

Afterwards everyone skipped over to the Croghan hotel where Claire and Tracey Duignan had a lovely meal awaiting. Thanks a million girls.

At 5.30 the brilliant Go Games kicked off in the Astroturf in Carrick on Shannon. Tommy introduced how his players effectively carry out training sessions in Glasgow. His idea is based around the clear advantage of using smaller teams to enhance and develop the skills of all the children participating.

The Go Games was structured with 7 a-side teams along with a coach for each player. The extra coaches were simultaneously used as referees throughout the matches.
It was evidently beneficial to all taking part as the somewhat weaker players were able to hold their own against their stronger counterparts.

After this session, Tommy completed the day's events by conducting a talk to all contributors.

This was followed by an enjoyable time at the Senior Dinner Dance held in the Bush Hotel, Carrick at 8pm.

Special thanks to all involved, especially Tommy Main and Tir Chonaill Harps, Peter Carney, Pat Fitzgerald, all at the Roscommon County Games Development Committee (Willie Hegarty and Seamus Sweeney), Connaught Council and Munster Council. Senior Football Update

GREAT to see that the seniors have apparently finally got their act together with a great display of creative football against Clann na nGael over the weekend.

The lads played with fierce passion and determination in easily overcoming a dejected Clann. Hopefully this is the beginning of improvement for the team. Players appeared to have developed a sense of pride that was somewhat missing over the last while.

On a duller note, there are still two players refusing to comply with the club's rules that the complete shorts and socks have to be worn during games and not mismatched colours that highly distract from the overall display of our green and gold. Wake up lads... we have plenty of good young minors who are more than willing to take your place if the opportunity arises!!

The Mighty Minors

SHANNON GAELS MINORS played a lively challenge game against neighbours Ballinameen on Sunday March 10th. Croghan stadium was the venue and there was doubt beforehand on the condition of the pitch. Thankfully the weather held fine and the stadium glimmered in the sunlight. Gaels used the occasion to test players in alternating positions with great success.

Andy Dolan came in between the posts replacing Cathal Sweeney to the full forward position. Both conveyed excellent composure throughout the match and Dolan was a very competent keeper. Sweeney was speedy up front, winning numerous kick outs and proving that he is a player to watch in the future.

Ryan Dempsey and Ciaran Murray completed the full forward line and the two were more than capable of their striking role. These two players will be a vital aspect to the forward force of this team when full fitness is reached.

Pearse Beirne was once again inspirational in most of the attacking play. Niall Lynch lined out at midfield alongside Cathal O' Dowd and gave a much improved display from previous matches. Mark O' Dowd, Fergal Harmon, James Deane and Matthew Molloy were strong and proficient in defence, marking their opponents well and keeping the scoreline close for most of the game.

Liam Murtagh was at his usual best as was Niall Leydon and James Filan, who were entertaining to watch with their immense skill.

Management retained super sub Shane O' Dowd until the final quarter. It was unfortunately too late as the wee man couldn't redeem matters, although his efforts were exceptional.

Ballinameen ran out winners by a four point margin. It was an entertaining contest with the two teams displaying a high standard of gaelic football throughout.

AS FAR AS MINOR PLAYERS ARE CONCERNED, THERE IS A VERY IMPORTANT MATCH AGAINST BOYLE NEXT SUNDAY (MARCH 16TH) IN BOYLE AT 12 p.m.

Full turnout by both the U16s and minors at training during the week is essential if players expect to be part of the starting 15. Failure to be present at training or failure to adhere to wearing the full club colours will mean immediate refusal by team management to play next Sunday.

Minor league success

THE MINORS LADS had a tremendous win over rivals Michael Glaveys yesterday afternoon (March 2nd).

Shannon Gaels were by far the stronger opponents clocking up an impressive 3-8 when the final whistle was blown. Michael Glaveys kicked seven points throughout the match. This achievement follow the previous week's win over St. Croans in Enfield.

James Deane was superb in defence alongside Mattew Molloy, Fergal Harmon and James Filan. They were backed up by solid gaming between the posts by Fintan Sweeney. Liam Murtagh was inspirational in his role as an attacking half back. David O' Dowd along with Cathal O' Dowd lined out at centre-field and were a brilliant force.

We had the return of Shane Leydon playing his first match in the league. He controlled the forward line with his exceptional talent. Also making their mark was Pearse Beirne and Daniel Morris who opened up the Croan's defence line, contributing to many of the scores. Gaels ran out deseved winners by four points even being the under-dogs.

The next Minor game will be against Boyle on Sunday, March 16th at 12 p.m. Boyle will be at home.

Community Games...

Croghan Drumlion U15 five a side footballers took part in this indoor competition on Saturday 16th February 2008.

Captain Shane O' Dowd, one of the county's most decorated players in this event, led his team out against a very strong side from Taughmaconnel. Shane holds 2 county medals, 1 Connaught and 1 All Ireland in this competition. The sides were level 2-2 at half time thanks to a magical strike from Mike Murtagh followed by a goal from defender Daniel Marron. Taughmaconnel used their physical strength to advantage in the second half to run out winners on the scoreline of 3-2. Keeper John McDermott made some excellent saves, Shane O'Dowd and Daniel Marron played their hearts out in defence.

Matthew Mulvey was excellent in defence and should prove a real force in next years event. Michael Murtagh and Darren Conlon tried their very best up front against a much stronger opposition.

Great credit to the team and management of Paul Beirne's and Luke O' Dowd for participating so strongly.

Minor league football

The minor team managed by Shane Loftus & Fergus O Beirne travel to Cootehall this Sunday for a challenge game with St. Michaels. All players to be in Cootehall Sunday morning not later than 11.20 am. The team have played 2 games so far in the Division 2 league drawing with Kilbride in Round 1 and losing out narrowly to Oran in round 2.

The parish of Croghan can seek great pride in its GAA teams both present and past, who endeavour to keep this North Roscommon team equally as impressive as their bigger, more experienced counterparts.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club is not a separate entity to Shannon Gaels. There is only ONE Shannon Gaels club and it comprises the seniors, ladies AND the minors. The minor club is simply appointed to take charge of one vital aspect of club activity – coaching and running ALL underage gaelic activities for children between the ages of 5-18.

The Objective of the Minor Club...

TO MAKE EVERYONE in the parish clear about the role of the minor club, here is a brief synopsis...

Our minor club is strong and vibrant because it has a team of dedicated voluntary officials committed to the promotion and development of gaelic games.

It is intended to promote participation for ALL children and to present GAA as a fun recreation for our youth as they learn the skills and technologies of gaelic football in a healthy, structured and relaxed environment.

Our programmes run on three concepts (a) Physically -By helping the youth to acquire basic playing techniques, improving fitness and developing positive lifetime habits, (b) Psychologically -By teaching kids to learn control their emotions and develop a sense of confidence in their own ability, technical, tactical and physical, (c) Socially and Morally - By learning to combine with teammates, play by the rules and respect team mentors and match officials.

We are committed to implementing a Code of Best Practice which is produced by the GAA coaching and games development committee and approved by the Irish Sports Council, our Youth are coached once a week in the sports complex over the winter period and thereafter in Croghan during the summer. Our tremendous coaches all undertook foundation & level 1 coaching courses at the beginning of the year and attended coaching conferences, availed of first aid courses all in the interest of the club.

All kind subscriptions and monies raised are directed to finance underage activity. It costs us approximately €1500 to equip and maintain each underage team per year.

Hosting events like Feile or supporting visiting clubs are at considerable expense, but the experiences gained and friendships made far outweigh the financial burden. We hold a presentation night each year to celebrate achievements and improvements made by our young players.

We appreciate very much all the help we receive from the senior club and the ladies club when needed. We are still behind in terms of counties like Galway and Kerry when it comes to underage training, but the Roscommon Minor Board finally has got its act in line and now has an excellent coaching and games development committee headed by Willie Hegarty and our own clubman Seamus Sweeney. All the resources are there and it is our objective to continuously coach coach coach our young players over the coming year.

In this regard we seek the support of our senior club in building a club base from the very bottom and from parents and senior players in assisting us. We hope that this newsletter gives the required insight into what we as a club achieve.

Tommy Main, the main coaching expert with Tir Chonaill Harps, Glasgow, will be coming to Croghan to interact with younger players aged between 14-18. he will be teaching them the basics on how to referee, train efficiently among other ‘off the field’ aspects.
This YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAMME will involve 6 of our players and those who are given the roles will undoubtedly get superior advice as well as have a fun filled few days.

MINOR FOOTBALL
The 2008 County Minor League commences on Sunday Feb 3rd. The team are already in training coached by Shane Loftus and Fergus Beirne. A challenge match is scheduled against Boyle this Sunday 20th Jan at 12 noon in Boyle. It’s great news to hear that these lads are out training so early in the year. Good luck to all involved.

THE SPLASH IN THE POND!

CAVETOWN LAKE was the chilly venue for the adventerous splash last week as a few brave souls sprinted into its icy water.

The crowd gathered in their hundreds to mockingly laugh at the shivering swimmers while they themselves huddled around in their festive clothing. Around 15 braved the elements and were almost speechless with the inhumane temperature of the lake. A great jovial atmosphere blotted out most of the freezing thoughts after the divers had completed the challenging task. Whiskey and mulled wine were provided by the Croghan Bar, defrosting any icicles forming on the swimmers' hair!

Unfortunately, as most highly anticipated events go, some little hiccups were encountered. As stated in our recent December Newsletter (see below) Milo Beirne, Pudsy McKeown, Fr. Martin and Seamus Beirne were all eager contestants in the race for 'Battle of the Bathers'. Outrageous odds were being placed on each contender with the gambling locals competing for a winner.

Milo Beirne was first to be unequivocally expelled after all his donations were received from mysterious political sources; Pudsy McKeown was dismissed from even attending the event after boastfully admitting he would sputter into the lake on his Massey Ferguson with the dog, Tilley keeping watch from the bonnet; Fr. Martin even though gaining substantial financial backing it was later revealed to all be from a mister Frank Feighan (something to do with an old car); and after losing the comradeship of his fellow contendees, Seamus Sweeney decided enough was enough and left his togs at home.

Wee Jimmy Glancy, fully attired in Santa Costume over a concealed wetsuit, recieved a phone call that morning which resulted in him tearfully taking off his beloved santa outfit and donning a black suit instead. Apart from these minor distractions, it was a very successful event which raised substantial funds which will meet the needs of our underage teams in 2008. Thanks goes out to the participants, The Croghan Bar and to Kit Beirne and all members of the Cavetown Residences Association for providing facilities at the lake.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our club members a wonderful Christmas and a joyful new year. Parents, your continued support by attending matches, bringing players to venues and general dedication in ensuring your children focus on developing their football skills does not go unnoticed. Thank you for your work throughout 2007 and we hope your support will continue into 2008. Coaches, mentors and club executives, without your unwavering commitment and perseverance the club would not be what it is today. All the ‘background’ work involved in preparing the players, pitches, organising match times and venues, devising training programmes, controlling the club’s finances and much more deserve immense credit. Sometimes focus may be too much on winning, but without our loyal coaches, mentors and executives, the club would not be as renowned within the echelons of Gaelic football. Players, for a small team like Shannon Gaels to achieve what it has in the past year, and years previous, it can only mean one thing—that its players are superb. This is true for all levels with the minor club from as young as the U8s right up to minor. This year both the U11s and the U14s were crowned champions and once again brought a great sense of pride to the local community. We are delighted with most of your dedication and we hope this will persist in the coming year. Once again THANKS TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS!!!

The ‘little ones’
As another year draws to an end and we recap on our footballing calendar, we can certainly look back with pride and a sense of achievement. Our U10 panel are definitely an enthusiastic bunch and very interested in their football… we started off 2007 with the U10 Boyle tournament – always a delight to take part in as it is brilliantly organised and congratulations to them. Long may they continue. Most of the U10 panel took part in the Kilglass U11 tournament. Shannon Gaels won the B group final and brought home the first cup of the year for the club. This panel of players were presented with their medals after our annual fundraising walk in Croghan by Fintan Cregg – of the Roscommon Minor Panel 2006. We have a great bunch of children coming up the ranks, starting off with U8 & U10’s and the Club’s future looks very bright.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who helped me with the coaching and organising of this panel namely; Fergus O’Beirne, Debbie Beirne & Trevor McKeon and all the parents that turn up week after week to bring their children to training and games.
Also thanks to Sea Murtagh & Chris O’Dowd who took a panel of U8’s to Tulsk back in September for a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon football tournament.
Wishing you all a happy Christmas and a very successful 2008.

Overall we can look back at this year with pride and satisfaction. We witnessed the development of our U16 team that “might do all right” to a team that “can do all right”. While this team was not successful in winning trophies, they were successful in so many other areas. The progress of all players was a joy to watch, both individual and as a team. As each year goes by you are always looking for that one, two or even three players that has the ability to go on and represent the club (or County) at Senior level. I can confidently say that this year we are looking at a lot more than three players that have a tremendous future ahead of them playing football. To help maintain the progress of these young lads it is important to insure that good facilities are available for them and their coaches. That is why from time to time we look to you for your support both personally and financially to help achieve our goals.Many thanks must go to the players for their effort, the coaches for their patience, the parents for their encouragement and lifts to games and the officers of the club for keeping everything going. - Shane Loftus

Shannon Gaels U 14
What a year! After winning the treble in 2006 expectations were high going into 2007. When Chris revealed that we were promoted to Division 2 there was mixed reactions, with half of last years team now over age and playing 15 a side on a full pitch the task was daunting. However as characteristic with this bunch of players nothing is impossible and they began preparations with a weekly session in the gym during the winter. The panel was assessed and some gaps were evident from the get go, the search was on for new talent and Darragh O Carroll was a welcome addition. After a successful challenge with St Michaels on Good Friday our league campaign kicked off on April 25th ( a day earlier than planned to facilitate the punters going to Punchestown) with a victory over Elphin, this was followed with victories over Tulsk, Castlerea, Strokestown, Western Gaels and Oran. The Strokestown game was a tight affair as we were without Luke O Dowd who was judging stock at Balmoral but two goals from Fintan Sweeney and another from Matthew Mc Dermott secured a two point victory. Our next league outing was a top of the table clash away to St Ciarans on June 7th. On a hot sunny evening in Fuerty the Gaels produced their best league display to date, Patrick Cummins who hadn’t been available earlier due to college comitments totally dominated the midfield exchanges while scoring three long range points. Liam Murtagh was in spectacular form on the forty contributing a goal and four points. We ran out winners by twenty points against a fancied St Ciarans. This was followed with further success against St Aidans and Kilbride and we finished the league top of the table having won all nine games. Next up was feile, such a fantastic national event to come to the locality was a joy to all. We hosted the Warrickshire team and participated in the parade in Carrick on Shannon on June 29th proudly displaying the club colours and on June 30th we played in the competition. U 14 championship commenced on July 12 at home to Western Gaels, this was a tough battle with never more than a score separating the teams until the final ten
minutes when the Gaels pulled away with two late goals from Michael Murtagh and Darren Conlon. David O Dowd was outstanding at centre back all through and along with Daniel Marron, Conor O Dowd and Aideen Filan they snuffed out a strong Western Gaels forward line. Two days later we travelled to Ballyforan to play St Aidans in the next round, the Gaels were in control from the throw in and with man of the match Shane O Dowd scoring four goals and Kialan O Dowd getting his first championship goal victory was never in doubt. The championship was now gathering momentum and next up was a semi final clash with Castlerea. Kilmore on July 19th was the new venue but as Castlerea didn’t show up due to communication issues, Shannon Gaels were subsequently awarded the game. There was now a break until the final with Eire Og and families availed of the opportunity to take that well deserved holiday. Garda Cup was next out of the blocks and with wins over Kilmore, Western Gaels and old rivals Ballinameen a place in the final versus Boyle was secured. We beat Boyle in the final of this competition in 2006 but this year Boyle were a much superior and well balanced Division 1 team and despite the best efforts of Keelan Loftus, David O Dowd, Liam Murtagh, Luke O Dowd, Patrick Cummins Aideen Filan and Lisa Collins we were outclassed in the final.The looming championship final was a key conversation topic around the parish and finally Sunday August 26 th in Boyle was judgment day. In preparation we traveled to Drumkeeran for a challenge, it afforded the opportunity to try out alternative options and although we pulled away in the last ten minutes the victory was far from decisive. Sunday August 26th came, conditions were ideal for football and supporters travelled in droves. Eire Og opened the stronger and were one goal and three points up after eight minutes before Liam Murtagh got a blistering goal.
It was end to end football. Eire Og then scored two goals and began to dominate before David O Dowd finished off a 70 yard solo run with a great individual goal, he followed this with a splendid long range point and the Gaels were one point ahead at half time. Some strong words from Gay during the interval set the scene for a gusty second half performance. Fintan Sweeney was now on top at full forward and he added two points but Eire Og swept up field and rattled our net followed by two points. Gaels re-shuffled the pack, the changes had immediate impact, it was now route one direct football, David O Dowd was dominating the half back line while Sile O Dowd was mopping up the breaking ball, Liam Murtagh although policed by two Eire Og defenders was rampant, Fintan Sweeney and Darren Conlon were out in front for every ball. A high ball from Liam Murtagh was deflected to the net by Fintan Sweeney, Liam Murtagh followed with a fine individual goal and then it was the Darren Conlon show, he scored a point from an acute angle followed by two classic goals and another point, Fintan Sweney added three more points from frees which put the victory beyond doubt and the Division 2 Cup was heading for Croghan for the very first time in the clubs history. Final score Shannon Gaels 6 – 15, Eire Og 5 – 8. When Captain David O Dowd lifted the Cup a dream had come through for a bunch of players full of skill, passion and commitment, winning the U 14 championship for three consecutive years is some achievement. Jubilant scenes followed with bonfires blazing as the cavalcade traveled back through Drumlion, Cortober and a circuit around Carrick Town before moving on to Croghan for food and refreshments kindly provided by Tracy Duignan.Coupled with a hectic club schedule four of our players were picked to represent Roscommon at county level – Luke O Dowd, Fintan Sweeney, Liam Murtagh and David O Dowd. This has added a new dimension to their game while also enhancing club performance. This U14 panel have brought such pride and joy to their parents, school, club and parish – Keep it Going ! - JAMES EGAN

On St. Stephen's Day there will be a big splash in Cavetown Lake as participants from the club dive into the freezing water to raise funds. Please show your support and wonderful refreshments will be available.

The minor club are attempting to provide festive entertainment for the senior members of the club by holding a poker classic on the 30th December at 4pm in the Carrick on Shannon Golf Club. Everyone is welcome and large cash prizes are on offer.

‘Supporting underage sport throughout the club’
WELCOME… all new electives to our Minor Board and to those returning for another year. Our AGM was recently held and a few new faces have joined our committee. Firstly, the chairperson this year will be Paticica Beirne, who takes over from Aidan Filan. This undoubtedly is a perfect position for this marvellously charismatic lady and is a delightful choice of leadership. The treasurer, Brendan Morris will be using his calculator for another year and Chris O’ Dowd will still have the wonderful task of confronting a certain Mr. Kelly about match fixtures!!! A couple of editions back, those avid readers of this newsletter will be reminded of a particular piece highlighting the growing domination from the female force within the club. Yes, it stressed how the guys can no longer snigger and guffaw when they hear about ladies playing football… this of course was brought about by our girls reaching the county final in their first year together. Oh how the senior men’s team quaked in their boots. Well, low and behold, the situation has deteriorated since. Not only are the females beating them on the pitch but the new chairperson is… a woman?!!!!! The Spice Girls reunion must have reignited feelings of Girl Power because in the short space of time since our 2006 AGM, the club has been transformed. And certainly not for worse as the ladies involvement brings a well needed sense of entertainment and craic!!!! Patricia Noone’s name definitely springs to mind as a person full of amusement and a great personality. We have no doubt about your ability to lead the club forward over the coming years. Your father, the late Tommy Noone, from Croghan village was always a staunch supporter and member of the club. Paddy Mulvey recently reflected on his dependability in particular when everyone else might let the side down. Yes, your pedigree is proven so now let the craic commece!!!!
We sincerely thank Aidan Filan for his dedicated services over the years. Under his guidance the club flourished and expanded. He was always enthusiastic in taking on new ideas and ventures.
We will miss him a lot over the next weeks, but thankfully he is not lost to the club – just away on license for a short break…

PRESENTATION NIGHT
Last Friday evening the Bush Hotel was the venue for the Ladies Presentation night. It was a superb formal event with speeches and everything. The captain of the Leitrim Ladies team was on hand to present runner up medals to the ladies. A commendable part to note was the ladies’ inclusion of both U16 and U12 girls teams in the presentation. This was very kind on their part and proves their commitment to supporting underage football. Another element on the night was the launch of the Shannon Gaels Ladies Calendar which is available throughout the parish. The calendar stands as a testament to the achievements of the ladies over the year. For the small fee of €10, not only will you be supporting the ladies but also looking at them on your wall for 2008!!!
Sinead Brennan, captain of the all-conquering Leitrim Ladies football team attended along with the Quinn Cup which they won as All-Ireland Junior Champions. The Cup is named after a Mary Quinn who hailed from County Leitrim, and is a fitting tribute as Leitrim were the inaugural winners. The U12s also appear in the May section of the calendar along with their coaches Joe Murray and Edel O’ Dowd. These are most certainly the faces of the future – Laura Conlon, Connie Doyle, Blue Sky McGarry, Mairead O’ Dowd, Aine O’ Dowd, Laura Deane, Niamh Murray, Caoimhe O’ Dowd, Eimear Matthews, Tess Murtagh, Aisling Egan, Sarah Surliss, Rachel McDermott, Eimear Cryan, Christina Beirne. SPLASH IN THE POND – There is huge interest in this novel idea. Twelve personalities are getting their feet wet along with anyone else who wishes to brave the elements on St. Stephen’s Day. This event is intended to provide part of the funding necessary to run the minor club for the forthcoming year and also supply gear and equipment for approx. 150 children. Your general support for the cause will be greatly appreciated. The 12 personalities are as follows:
Patrick Sharkey, Tracy Duignan, Gerry Mullaney, Oliver Donagher, Wee Jimmy Glancy, Frank O’ Dowd, Julie Marron, Kieran Lynch, Padraig Glancy, Shane Devaney, Johnny McGuire and Pudsey McKeown. In addition, it is intended to nominate TWO CELEBRITY SWIMMERS to the list and this can be done by YOU. The person to raise the appropriate sponsorship will get the chance to push their nominated celebrity into the pond. At the time of going to print, Milo Beirne and Seamus Sweeney are hotly tipped winners, with Fr. Martin a close third losing out by a few quid.

Minor Club Meeting
A meeting of the minor club will be held this Thursday night December 13th in the Patrician hall, Cortober at 8pm. All members are welcome and particularly coaches are asked to attend.
Congrats to…our four minor players namely Niall Lynch, Mathew Molloy, James Deane and Cathal O’ Dowd who took part in trials for the County Minors last Saturday in Elphin. Best of luck lads!!!

We have commenced coaching boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 11 years of age. It takes place in the Sports Complex, Carrick on Shannon each Thursday evening between 6-7pm.
ALL CHILDREN ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND.
A nominal fee exists and we would especially welcome interest from parents, senior players from both men and ladies clubs in assisting with the coaching of these children. Please contact any member of the minor club in this regard.

Chairperson’s Inaugural Address:
Now that I am the chairperson of Shannon Gaels minor club, I look to 2008 with a great sense of pride and anticipation. The coming year of football is bound to be as exciting as the last. We, as a club are very committed to our underage players and I believe that each individual brings with them a unique characteristic. It is vital to encourage them from a very young age and this is one of our defining elements as a club. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank my predecessor, Aidan Filan, for doing a splendid job and I will aspire to do the same. He brought great enthusiasm and dedication to his role over the past three years. I wish him well for the future. I look forward to the coming year as we improve, inspire and involve all of Shannon Gael’s young members in the delightful game that is Gaelic football.
